Summary form only given. Periodic-dispersion compensations have attracted much interest in soliton-based communication systems. Recent studies show existence of a stationary pulse in dispersion-compensated systems that has properties more attractive than ideal solitons in that it has less timing jitter and improved signal-to-noise ratio. Such a pulse is characterized by the periodic change of chirp and reduced nonlinearity; we call it a quasi-soliton as a generic term. In this paper, we first derive dynamical equations for parameters of a quasi-soliton using variational method. We then apply them to a system with wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM) and discuss the effect of collisions among quasi-solitons in different wavelengths.
