The European Union has a legal policy and economic profile, as well as a network route grid that presents a unique multinational analogous of the U.S. federal airspace system. The revised EUROCONTROL convention signed in 1997 by the member states was a landmark in European air traffic management development. "Galileo" is Europe's own Global Navigation Satellite system, providing a highly accurate, guaranteed global positioning service under civilian control. "Galileo" is the European contribution to GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite system): the target date for "Galileo" operation is 2008.
