The paper analyzes the impact of radio altimeter (LA) echoes on the signal collected by a Wireless Avionics Intra-Communication (WAIC) system installed on an aircraft. It characterizes the LA echoes with respect to power, occupied bandwidth and time occurrence for an aircraft flying at different altitudes and over different terrain typologies. The information is used for understanding the impact of LA signals on the performance of an outdoor WAIC system. Channel coding techniques for forward error correction are evaluated as interference mitigation strategies.
