For finding the optimal and efficient route between the source and destination for unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), path planning is one of the most crucial issues to be investigated. Although there are many study proposals on the challenges with UAV path planning in the literature, issues with target recognition and identification still exist given the rapid mobility of UAVs. The best choices must be made for a variety of mission-critical actions carried out by UAVs to address these problems with path planning for UAVs. For UAVs to be aware of their locations in relation to the map or graph, these judgments require a map or graph of the mission environment. Taking into consideration the aforementioned considerations, this paper investigates several UAV path planning techniques that have been used over the years. Path planning approaches aim to provide UAVs with a collision-free environment while also determining the optimal and shortest path. To calculate a safe path in the quickest amount of time to the goal, path planning techniques are crucial. A critical review of the current plans has also been performed using UAV path planning. For easier comprehension, the text also includes several comparison tables that use criteria including path length, collision avoidance, cost-efficiency, completeness, energy-efficiency, robustness, optimality and time-efficiency.
