In this work we describe the optimization of the pumping efficiency studied by a ray-tracing algorithm and we demonstrate that it can be as high as 98% in a simple side-pumping configuration for solid state slab lasers. Moreover, we experimentally verified the numerical results in a compact 350 W QCW laser head, equipped with 1.2 kW linear diode arrays and a ceramic Nd:YAG slab.
