Because of the relative capabilities and limitations of automatic target recognizers and the human operator, there is an emerging consensus that assisted (rather than automated) target recognition systems are most appropriate to near- and mid-term target acquisition and reconnaissance system concepts. This paper explores some of the human systems interface issues associated with assisted target recognition.
