The fault diagnosis capability of the power converter directly affects the reliability of switched reluctance motor (SRM) drive systems. Conventional fault diagnosis methods involving current error diagnosis algorithms require complex analysis. Based on the current reconstruction scheme, this article proposes a new fault diagnosis method for power converters of a six-phase SRM to address this issue. First, a current reconstruction method is proposed, providing adequate information with unique characteristic values corresponding to various faults. Then, the difference between the virtual normal and fault bus current coefficients is employed to diagnose the type and location of faults. The proposed method does not require additional sensors or complex calculations. Finally, the experimental validation of the proposed fault diagnosis method is conducted on an SRM drive.
