In this paper, we studied the effect of the phase noise caused by the intrinsic analog optical link noise on orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) systems. The effect of this additive phase noise in the demodulation has been investigated by both numerical simulations based on a theoretical analysis and experiments using a low cost Vertical Cavity Surface Emitting Laser (VCSEL). The phase noise effect of the analog link on 64 QAM OFDM signal transmission when the laser relative intensity noise (RIN) is -131dB/Hz is investigated and found to be very small.
