This paper presents a novel method for the calculation of eddy current loss in coreless stator axial field permanent magnet (AFPM) machines based on a universal parametric magnetic network model. To account for three-dimensional field effects in an AFPM machine, a multilayer modeling method is used to estimate both the axial and tangential magnetic field component in the air gap. The winding eddy current loss is calculated using the results of magnetic network analysis, taking into account 2-D and 3-D effects and non-sinusoidal field distribution. Furthermore, these calculations are compared to those from finite-element analysis and experimental tests with good agreement.
