This work discusses the basic physics and design of semiconductor injection lasers with integrated nonlinear optical elements that support resonant intracavity of laser modes. One or several laser modes serve as an intracavity optical pump for a variety of nonlinear optical processes including second-harmonic, sum-frequency, and difference-frequency generation, Raman Stokes or anti-Stokes scattering, and parametric frequency down-conversion.
