Ships sailing on the sea will encounter the danger of hitting the rocks, strong winds and big waves. The traditional PID controller for ships is determined by three control parameters Kp, Ki and Kd. When the sea situation changes, the parameters cannot be adjusted online according to the sea situation. So PID control has no good adaptability for systems whose precise mathematical model is unknown. Fuzzy control is a kind of computer digital control. It has fuzzy logic reasoning, fuzzy set and fuzzy language variables. What's more, Fuzzy control is a kind of intelligent control. We found that as for some systems which is hard to establishment of accurate mathematical model, experienced operators with manual control often can achieve satisfactory results. Of course, using a computer to calculate and later simulating people's own decision-making process is the main principle in which the device works. In life and scientific research, this control technology has achieved good results. In order to improve control performance. Fuzzy control is introduced. It can enhance the economy, safety and comfort of ships in maritime transportation. By analyzing the mathematical expression of fuzzy controller, a more concise and effective automatic rudder is designed to control the ship's heading. It makes the ship safer and more stable at sea. The simulation shows that the controller not only retains the advantages of the simple structure of the traditional PID controller, but also has strong robustness.
