The increase in ship traffic density in coastal waters leads to difficulties in ship navigation and a rise in the number of navigation accidents. To further understand the navigation conflict risk in complex waters, the methods of ship navigation risk are compared and summarized in this paper by reviewing previous studies. Sum up the main challenges and development trends of navigation conflicts research as follows: 1) the difficulties of establishing a dynamic quantitative model of ship navigation conflict in complex water remaining; 2) the dynamic and reliable conflicts assessing on a global scale will be a central trend in future research work.
