We report in this work the first experimental generation of Helmholtz-Gauss beams (HzG). We employ computer-generated holograms for creating all classes of HzG beams. Their transverse intensity distributions and propagation characteristics are studied and the observations are compared to the theoretical predictions with good quantitative agreement. The power spectrum of the HzG beams is also measured and its intensity distribution is characterized.
