This paper presents an analysis the possibilities for automation of the railway transport for the Mainline. The Automatic train operation (ATO) and the European Train Control System (ETCS) are important basic technologies for increasing the efficiency of rail transportation systems and for creating standardized, transnational automation. The combination is referred to as ATO over ETCS. Its implementation will allow to calculate the optimal trip profile at any given time and to control the vehicle’s traction and braking systems on automated train runs. In this way the network capacity will be increased by reducing the intervals between trains and energy can be saved by adjusting traction and braking forces.
