In this article, a dual-permanent-magnet-excited vernier machine is analyzed from the perspective of air-gap field harmonics. The air-gap field harmonics of the machine is analyzed using air-gap field modulation theory. The influence of slot–pole combination of the machine on losses is investigated. Comparative evaluations of the machines having various slot–pole combinations are conducted using the finite-element method. It is shown that, by adopting appropriate slot–pole combinations for the machine, the torque capability can be maintained, while the losses can be significantly reduced. Finally, the experiments on a prototype machine verify the theoretical analysis.
