Summary form only given, as follows. Erbium-doped fibers have made it possible to develop compact, diode-pumped sources of ultrashort pulses for a variety of applications. Principles of operation and design criteria for high-repetition-rate picosecond soliton sources as well as for high-power femtosecond lasers are discussed.
