We propose a design of a novel spot size converter (SSC) integrated laser diode emitting at 1.55 /spl mu/m. The threshold current was 8 mA, and the slope efficiency was 0.5 W/A. The beam divergence in the horizontal and vertical directions was 15.7/spl deg/ and 12.3/spl deg/, respectively. Simple fabrication procedure and high performance of our device proves that it is suitable as a light source for optical access networks.
