We have examined vertical cavity lasers with different amounts of tapering to quantify the reduction of scattering losses. To compare the results between these and other devices, we note the shorter taper is sloped at 0.5 /spl mu/m per an effective index step of /spl Delta/n=0.06 and the longer taper is sloped at 1 /spl mu/m per /spl Delta/n=0.06.
