This paper is concerned with the analysis, measurement and mitigation methods for bearing current related bearing failures in inverter supplied electric locomotive traction motors. The motivation for the study is a record of premature bearing failures observed in AC traction motors in Indian Railways following a transition from GTO converters to IGBT converters after 2013. The nature of current path in an AC locomotive is different from that in an industrial installation. This paper presents measurements of bearing currents in an experimental setup of an IGBT converter and traction motor, discusses the current paths, and carries out an analysis of the effect of these currents on traction motor bearings. Common mode filter has been implemented as a retrofit solution for existing locomotives.
