In order to meet the desired application requirements, the design choices must consider the types of machine configurations, nature of winding, limitations of volume or dimensions set by the application as well as the system specifications such as the available voltage and current rating. The effects of winding and slot-pole combination selection on the sizing of permanent magnet synchronous machines for given system requirements will be outlined in this paper. By way of example, surface permanent magnet machines are designed, and scaling laws utilized to compare the performance variation due to slot-pole and winding configuration choice.
