Ultrasound testing technology is considered nowadays to be the most reliable solution for testing of railway axles in service and it is included in the standards. However, the Ultrasonic systems used are not equal in specification and performance, depending on the region. Several improvable issues, regarding ultrasound testing and inspection intervals definition, were identified in FP7-Euraxles project. The present study tries to prove that vibration signals contain information that can be used for fatigue cracks detection online in railway axles. Several tests were performed during fatigue tests of railway axles. Some measurements were taken in railway axles that resulted broken, showing that signals experiment large changes of energy at certain parameters when the crack appears and grows. Those changes did not appear in the cases where the axles did not break.
