Active load flow (ALF) analysis plays a crucial role in the planning and operation of modern power systems, particularly in accommodating distributed renewable energy sources within distribution networks. This study focusses on adapting ALF techniques for weakly meshed and radial distribution systems, which possess distinct characteristics from the transmission grid, necessitating tailored algorithms for accurate analysis. In this paper, we propose the Active Fast and Flexible Radial Load Flow (AFFRLF) and Active Fast and Flexible Weakly Meshed Load Flow (AFFWMLF) algorithms. These methods take advantage of a combination of the direct forward sweep (DFS) approach and a radial node linking matrix, tailored to the specific topology of each type of network. AFFRLF is designed for radial networks, while AFFWMLF accommodates weakly-meshed structures by introducing breakpoint concepts into the node linking matrix. Furthermore, we treat distributed generation (DG) units as negative PQ nodes, facilitating their integration into the analysis framework. The DFS technique significantly reduces computational steps, thereby minimising CPU time requirements. Furthermore, the flexibility offered by the node linking matrix allows seamless adaptation to network changes. To validate the proposed algorithms, a balanced 33-node radial weakly meshed system is used. The results demonstrate the effectiveness and precision of the proposed approach in computing steady-state specifications such as node voltages. This research contributes to enhancing the understanding and management of the challenges of integrating renewable energy in distribution networks.
