Summary form only given. We demonstrate that the low group velocity mismatch (GVM) of MgO:LiNbO/sub 3/ near 3 /spl mu/m permits the generation of 2 /spl mu/J femtosecond pulses consisting of only 5 optical cycles. The experimental setup of the seeded traveling wave type OPG employs a sub-30 fs pump source and a double pass configuration in order to improve the conversion efficiency and the spectral and spatial quality.
