This paper presents requirements of Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) for carrying Internet Protocol (IP) multicast traffic over ATM via satellite. ATM's connection-oriented nature results in bandwidth wastage when connections are setup via satellite, which is a shared media environment. This issue and additional requirements for accomplishing IP multicast (which is connectionless) over ATM (which is connection oriented) via satellite are addressed.
