The paper summarizes on the development of a fiber Bragg grating sensor for the detection of small changes of index of refraction of the medium surrounding the fiber. The etched fiber Bragg grating sensor can detect changes of the index of refraction of a liquid as small as a few parts in 10/sup -5/.
