This paper reports on a new approach wherein a single external ring cavity is used to enhance the efficiency in fourth harmonic generation of an infrared Nd:YAG solid state laser by incorporating two doubling stages inside one cavity. The principal idea is to trap the second harmonic radiation generated in the first doubling stage inside the cavity. Ideally, then, the frequency-doubled radiation circulates within the cavity until it is completely converted to the fourth harmonic.
