Existing research on lane-changing duration is still in need of breakthroughs, such as unclear interaction mechanism, unknown influence of heterogeneous vehicle types, and unquantified characterization of directional differences in lane-changing. In this regard, firstly the lane-changing data collection, lane-changing duration extraction, and the corresponding studies on the distribution of lane-changing duration were analyzed. The features of lane-changing duration for naturalistic driving were investigated, and various opinions of different scholars on the qualitative analysis of the influencing factors of lane-changing duration were reviewed. Finally, the research on modelling strategies for lane-changing duration was summarized from the perspective of mechanism modelling and data-driven approaches. In view of the limitations of the existing research, the outlook was proposed in terms of quantitative characterization of influencing factors and further optimization of model interpretability, which could provide research references for the improvement and enhancement of the theory of lane-changing duration and the design of autonomous lane-changing system for intelligent vehicles.
