In order to study the cross-section parameters of six-lane open-to-traffic expressways during the “Six to Ten” expressway reconstruction and expansion projects, this paper conducts research and analysis based on the Guangshao Expressway reconstruction and expansion project. Firstly, relevant literature from both domestic and international sources are surveyed and analyzed to determine the composition of the six lane section during the construction period, including lane width, lateral clearance, shoulder width, and setting width of channelizing devices. Then, suitable section combinations are selected based on the characteristics of the studied expressway. Finally, VISSIM traffic simulation models are used to conduct controlled experiments to simulate and evaluate different section combination schemes. The recommended section parameters for open-to-traffic six lane section during the construction period of Guangshao Expressway are determined to be 1. 5m median strip +0.75m lateral clearance +3.75m truck lane +3.5m commercial vehicle lane +3.5m car lane +0.5m lateral clearance +0.75m width of separation facilities +0.5m lateral clearance +3.5m car lane +3.5m commercial vehicle lane +3.75m truck lane +0.75m lateral clearance +0.75m unpaved shoulder. The research results can provide references for determining six lane section parameters during the construction period of ten lane highways in China
