Interactive information visualizations (IViz) and visual analytics (VA) that leverage the complex system features of the maritime traffic network (MTN) help highlight significant phenomena and relevant events such as major trends, complex interactions among system elements, emerging behaviours and feedback loops, hence improving the awareness of the maritime situation. In this work, the essential properties that qualify the maritime traffic network as a complex system are detailed to guide the design of VA to enhance maritime fusion systems with improved maritime situational awareness (MSA) in support of decision makers. IViz and VA developed by the NATO Information System Technology Research Task Group IST-184 on “Visual Analytics for Complex Systems“ are illustrated for demonstration.
