We report a thermoelectrically cooled gated-mode single-photon detector operating at 1550 nm. The obtained quantum efficiency (/spl sim/11.6%) and the dark count probability (/spl sim/2/spl times/10/sup -5/) per gate makes it possible to realize long-distance fiber-optic quantum cryptography with a small quantum bit-error rate.
