As electrification globally shows a promise of lowering greenhouse and noxious vehicle emissions, the development of battery electrified vehicles (BEVs) with fully electrified powertrains for the Indian market poses a unique technical and commercial challenge broadly due to two reasons. Firstly, the inherent system complexity and secondly, given the technology globally being in its nascent stages, with rapidly evolving product maturity. The following paper gives an insight to the steps involved in a sophisticated development process for a complex product such as a traction battery for BEVs. It also proposes an approach to factor requirement for the Indian market and to frontload development activities so as to improve product maturity at significantly reduced development costs and time. Consequently, the key to successful development is a holistic approach with clear definition targets, process steps and interactions between all necessary development activities.
