Summary form only given. We report the results of a joint experimental and theoretical investigation of two types of laser structures. As our most exciting result, we observed efficient clamping of the linewidth enhancement factor a over a wide range of carrier densities for a class of quantum well configurations. These configurations are characterized by a narrow quantum well width together with a high confinement potential.
