As long as nuclear weapons exist it will be necessary to harden warships against the damage to ships electronic equipment caused by the Electromagnetic Pulse (EMP) from an exoatmospheric nuclear detonation. This paper discusses the theoretical guidance on ship hardening given by the MOD to the designers and builders of Royal Navy warships, the practical interpretation of this guidance in the shipbuilding environment and the results of deviations from the theoretical ideal revealed during actual Whole Ship EMP Trials..
