In this paper, numerical simulations demonstrate that parabolic pulse generation can also be observed in Raman amplifiers using standard telecommunications-grade dispersion shifted fibre (DSF) and, in particular, that this can be achieved using input pulses from inexpensive gain-switched semiconductor laser sources. The semiconductor laser based Raman parabolic pulse amplifiers finds wide application in the development of compact and environmentally-stable ultrafast sources around 1550 nm.
