Electronic throttle systems exhibit various advantages in energy efficiency improvement and carbon emission reduction as compared with the traditional mechanical ones. However, several challenges are imposed to high-precision control for the electronic throttle system with multiple nonlinearities and disturbances. These nonlinear factors include friction, return spring, transmission gear, and external disturbances. In this article, the angle regulation problem is addressed by applying disturbance observer-based discrete-time sliding mode control (SMC) algorithm. First, to obtain more accurate control performances, a generalized model of electronic throttle is accomplished with refined classification and modeling upon the main nonlinearities, including return spring torque and friction torque. Then, a novel disturbance observer is constructed based on this model to have accurate estimations of the lumped disturbances. Moreover, a composite method is obtained based on nonsmooth control and disturbance observer, which significantly alleviates the chattering problem and improves the disturbance rejection ability. Both dynamic and steady-state performance analyses are presented, which reveals faster dynamic responses and higher tracking precision with the studied approach. Finally, experimental comparisons with the existing approaches are illustrated to fully validate the effectiveness of the proposed scheme in the presence of different working cases.
