In this paper, an Automated Toll Plaza System (called as ATPS) using RFID and GSM modules has been proposed. The key aspect of this work is to deduct money from the vehicle owner’s DBBL rocket account automatically while vehicle passing through the toll plaza. The proposed ATPS model is formulated by the RFID and GSM modules that is controlled by the microcontroller-based database control module. Particularly, in ATPS, RFID receiver has interfaced with the microcontroller that is kept fixed constantly at the toll plaza for searching the RFID tags attached with individual vehicles. As soon as the tag comes in to the range of the receiver, the RFID receiver identifies the unique code from the tag and it transmits that information serially to the microcontroller. At that time, the sensor of RFID receiver identifies the vehicle first by checking all the information from the database. If the checking status is positive, the toll amount is deducted automatically from the owner’s DBBL account. On the other hand, IR has been used to sense the vehicle motion during opening and closing the gate. In order to evaluate the proposed system how does it work, a prototype ATPS has been implemented using RFID and GSM modules combined with the microcontroller. Experimental results show that, when a small car attached with RFID tag passing through the toll plaza, the car was received the entry permission and released from the toll plaza gate within 30 seconds and successfully deducted money from the owner’s DBBL rocket account. On the other hand, another car that had no registration did not get allowance for entering the toll plaza gate, whereas, another one that having registration but no balance at the rocket account also received no permission to enter the toll plaza gate. The latter both cars followed the toll plaza using alternative path. Finally, it has been shown that the proposed system works significantly well and showed a very promising prospect to solve the conventional manual toll plaza system in the highways of Bangladesh.
