Design and coupling efficiency of adiabatic spot-size converter lasers is reported, with far-field as narrow as 5.4/spl deg//spl times/5.4/spl deg/, with butt-coupled coupling efficiency to SMF up to 81%, with -1 dB lateral tolerance of /spl plusmn/2.0 /spl mu/m.
