Conventional flux reversal machines (FRMs) are limited in torque density due to large pole flux leakage, while the inherently doubly salient structure results in a large torque ripple. In order to enhance the torque performance, a consequent pole FRM (CP-FRM) with asymmetric V-shaped permanent magnet (PM) structure (AV-CPFRM) is proposed in this article. The pole flux leakage of the AV-CPFRM is reduced by utilizing the flux focus effect of the V-shaped magnets in conjunction with the CP structure, while the torque ripple is reduced by adopting the asymmetric pole structure. Subsequently, the AV-CPFRM is optimized and analyzed, and the influence of the torque performance on the asymmetric pole structure parameters is investigated. In addition, the electromagnetic performance of the optimized AV-CPFRM is compared with CP-FRM and CP-FRM with V-shaped (V-CPFRM) magnets based on finite-element analysis (FEA). The results suggest that the AV-CPFRM reduces torque ripple by 86.6% with an average torque increase of 11% compared to the conventional CP-FRM. Finally, the AV-CPFRM prototype is constructed and experimented.
