To achieve a safe and efficient dynamic wireless charging of EVs, a Dynamic Wireless Power Transfer (DWPT) system could employ various real-time roadside information (e.g. measurements of vehicular misalignment, speed, and foreign object presence) and vehicle-side information (DWPT receiver input, driver input, etc.). In this paper, an intelligent Vehicle Detection & Information system (VDIS) is proposed which incorporates these pieces of information to implement a misalignment-tolerant DWPT system. The proposed VDIS helps the DWPT controller adjust the power transfer to achieve misalignment tolerance, deploys an emergency shutdown in case a foreign object is detected on the electrified track, helps the driver improve the alignment of the vehicle with the charging track, and allows the driver to initiate or terminate charging. The designed prototype is successfully tested on a dynamically charged 25-kW electric bus (E-bus).
