The aim of our study is to explore the different functions of drones in flood protection, emphasizing their usefulness for rescue operations and technical assistance in flood-affected areas. We show how drones can be used for aerial surveillance, recording and sharing high-speed video to determine the extent of flooding and identify potentially stranded people. Drones can enhance search and rescue operations in hard-to-reach or low-visibility locations by using thermal imaging and high-resolution cameras to detect the heat signature of human bodies. Drones can also create makeshift communication networks in places where no conventional infrastructure is available. This makes it easier for emergency services to coordinate effectively and pass on important information. After floods, drones are invaluable for assessing damage to infrastructure and enabling detailed inspections needed for repair and reconstruction efforts. They also deliver essential relief supplies to inaccessible areas, ensuring timely assistance to the affected population. Our research highlights these capabilities and demonstrates how drones can significantly improve the efficiency and effectiveness of flood management, ultimately improving community resilience and disaster response.
