Traffic system has a key role in the socioeconomic growth of a country. Although, with rapid increase in the population, the number of vehicles have been exponentially increased in the metropolitan cities. Therefore, traffic congestion has become a serious problem throughout the world. It results in air pollution, wastage of time, increase in fuel consumption and put negative impact on the economic growth of the country. However, the existing traffic system does not consider the traffic congestion on route as fixed time is assigned to the traffic lights at every road junction. To resolve this issue, this paper presents the real-time development of an adaptive traffic control system. It will dynamically control the traffic signals durations as per the traffic congestion sensed by the ultrasonic sensors at road crossings. Moreover, the proposed system will facilitate the emergency vehicles such as ambulance by providing it clear route to minimize any casualty risk. The whole project is divided in three stages i.e., logic development, establishing IoT based communication and real-time prototype implementation. The hardware results have convincingly validated the proposed system.
