We will describe the potential use of phase-sensitive optical parametric amplifiers, capable of generating no excess noise, in free-space optical transmission systems with large losses, such as in deep-space links. We will highlight that at low signal-to-noise ratio, such amplifiers can achieve the best receiver sensitivity, spectral efficiency as well as power efficiency. We will also discuss their different implementations using either highly nonlinear optical fibers or compact siliconnitride waveguides.
