Birefringence contrast scanning near-field optical microscope has been used to observe a boundary between preformat pits and grooves on the surface of magneto-optical disk. A periodic fluctuation of birefiringence was observed on the groove of boundary. This fluctuation seems to be a stress birefringence induced by preformat pits.
