An upgrade is required to existing NATO and UK HF ship shore communications systems to support applications beyond the traditional Baudot text message. A STANAG has been previously developed which describes a general, open, and interoperable system for data communications over HF radio. This paper will review the requirements of the NATO maritime community and their impact on the profile, and present an overview of the profile. The implementation of the architecture described in the STANAG has been tailored to meet NATO maritime communications requirements (including the use of STANAG 4285 and 4529 waveforms), and to be compatible with typical maritime HF ship shore circuits.
