The considerable development of passenger traffic in subway areas has quickly made it indispensable to set up methods of organizing and managing lines. For this reason, subway companies are very much concerned with counting passengers on their transport system. A passenger counting system is most important to transport companies. Video image processing techniques for counting people or managing traffic has been investigated by many authors. The optical sensors discussed in this paper offer several advantages including well defined detection areas, fast response time and true counting capability. The authors describe how a new technology has been developed and tested, based on linear cameras.
