AC motor traction with regenerative braking can easily be modified to a pure electric braking system in normal service operation. This enables better riding quality with improved accuracy of stopping position and consequently with short braking distance and less probability of making a flat wheel. A considerable amount of maintenance cost due to wear of friction brake equipment can be eliminated. From the viewpoint of reliability at emergency conditions, this paper does not propose anything, because the authors think for the moment it is enough to use the existing mechanical brake as it is.
