For the satellite industry, facing worldwide recession and space-agency budget cuts, the smaller, cheaper satellite suddenly became an attractive engineering solution, and the trend towards larger spacecraft began a slow reversal. The author discusses the trend towards smaller satellites in relation to cost and reliability. The work of Surrey Satellite Technology Ltd. is briefly discussed. The applications of microsats are then described and their use of low power, cheap consumer electronics components discussed.
