This paper focuses on a new pan European digital radio standard for the railways. Operators and engineers from the European railways have been working with the European Telecommunications Standards Institute, ETSI and industry to develop the standard under the project name EIRENE (European Integrated Radio Enhanced Network). Project EIRENE will provide the railways with a solution for most, if not all, their radio applications. EIRENE is being developed using the public cellular radio telephone standard GSM (Global System for Mobile communications) as a technological platform and will undergo trials from 1996.
