In the transmission and distribution business, as in many other industries, unrelenting demands for lower costs, shorter development timescales and higher quality force companies such as Rolls-Royce to radically redefine their internal processes and organisations. Once new processes are recognised, electronic product definition, electronic tools and the ability to exchange data rapidly across process interfaces become important enablers for process improvement to meet the company business needs. This paper describes the implementation of such initiatives in the product definition process in Rolls-Royce aerospace businesses and suggests the vision of the design process for the future in the transmission and distribution business.
