Preliminarily discussing the UK government's 10 year transport plan, this article then examines the question of energy usage of both rail and car transport. It compares the fuel consumption per person mile travelled and dispels the assumption that rail is necessarily always the greener way to travel. It also considers the environmental effects, and in particular the emission of greenhouse gasses.
